Samuel A Barker (1885-1968)
S. A. Barker at Northeast corner of 6th Street and Adams Street

In 1906, Samuel A. Barker (1885-1968) became the manager of Newman’s, a store that specialized in women’s apparel. After the death of Newman in 1920, Barker while still living at 1621 Whittier, purchased the store with other investors and the name was changed to S. A. Barker Company. 1n 1930, the company moved to the Illinois Building on northwest corner of 6th Street and Adams Street. Barker retired in 1962 but retained his seat as chairman as the board of directors.
