Born in a log cabin, and educated at home, Herbert O. Barnes (1867-1955) began working as a child to support his family. He was on his own when quite young, earning his keep as a farm hand, reading textbooks and eventually entering college. In time, and for 30 years, he would become the head of the math department at Springfield High School. His obit appeared on page 1 of the Illinois State Registrar.
