Captain Thomas Swaringuin (1832-1908) and his wife Sarah were the first residents of 1420 Holmes. Thomas served as Captain of the 7th and 28th Illinois Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War.
Charles Winfield Vail (1861-1945) and his wife Clara Isabel Barton Vail (1867-1951) lived at 1420 Holmes before moving to 1331 Holmes. Charles served 18 years as the Clerk of Superior Court of Illinois.
