The first resident of 1500 then 1400 Whittier were Perry Jayne (1871-1955) and his wife Faye Harriet Ferguson (1886-1954). Jayne was for many years a state building and loan examiner. He was the business manager for the Palmer Sanatorium for TB patients. He was also a veteran of the Spanish American War. The family connections are interesting and his roots are deep in Springfield. His great grandfather was Dr. Gersham Jayne (1791-1867) and his grandfather was Dr. William Jayne (1826-1916). Both were intimates of Abraham Lincoln. His mother was Margaret Palmer Jayne (1854-1903) whose father was John McAuley Palmer (1817-1900), who was an Illinois governor and U.S. Senator and who ran for the presidency in 1896. The sanatorium where Perry Jayne was a business manager was established in 1913 by his cousin Dr. George Palmer (1875-1943) who lived at 1525 Lowell.
