A veteran of the Civil War, George Hoffman (1840-1920) lived at 1620 then 1464 Whittier at the end of his life. His son, Fred Gottlieb Hoffman (1880-1956) was a painter and decorator. He was one of the workman employed at the Dana Thomas House in 1904. Susan Lawrence Dana commissioned Frank Loyd Write to design this house and she held a workman’s party in December of 1904 but Fred could not attend because his wife was about to deliver their first child. That child was named Susan Lawrence Dana Hoffman and she would be the recipient of Mrs. Dana’s attention for years.
