Fred R. Coats (1865-1951) was the first resident of 426 South Grand.

Fred Coats worked for the Illinois Watch Company at the age of 8. By 1895, he had his own company which specialized in producing small parts for watches, clocks and other electrical instruments. In 1943, he sold the company to the John W. Hobbs Corporation.
